My first post seems to have gone missing.
Our Pure Message fails to update the Spam rules file.
Sophos Autoupdate has initiated an update for PureMessage spam rulesError: Compiled spam rules file (asdb.antispam) not present after compilation process., hr 0x80004005 (error code 0x80004005).
How to resolve this?

Would you please confirm the version of the Puremessage you have installed?
it is 3.1.4
Sophos PureMessage 3.1.4 version is no longer supported. Please refer to the below link for more information:https://support.sophos.com/support/s/article/KB-000034795?language=en_US.
I would suggest you download the latest version of Puremessage from MySophos account login and install the same. Thanks.
Okay can it be updated from
3.1.4 to 4.0.4 ?
I'm experiencing the same problem and error as Chris it started on 24th Mar.
I am running ver 4.04 of Pure Message on Exchange 2016 EdgeServer
I've uninstalled pure message and checked that sophos AV updates OK, which it does.
Re installed PureMessage. I can then see sophos downloading the updates, but fails when it runs the setup for Puremessage saying compiled spam rules file (asdb.antispam) not present after compilation process., hr 0x80004005 (error code 0x80004005).
But of course with a new install I now have no spam db at all on the server.
So I restored the edge-server from a few days back when it was still updating OK, but that restored server doesn't update the spam fills either now, but at least I have some blocking of spam.
Can you please advise on what the error could be?
as Mike said I too am suspecting the update itself to be faulty.

I am having the same issue with PureMessage 4.0.4 on Exchange 2016 boxes. AutoUpdate download's the PureMessage-AntiSpam-Data-xx.xx.xx file all OK But on installation get "Message: ERROR: Product installation failed: Sophos PureMessage: 0x80004005"
An updated rule set has been released as of March 30, 2021 that has corrected this issue.
