External link does not open in sandboxed FF but instead opens in new unsandboxed FF

Sandboxie 5.3 - 64 bit

Windows 7 Home

Firefox 67.0

If I click a link in eg Thunderbird (unsandboxed) or any other unsandboxed app, and I have a sandboxed Firefox running, then clicking on the link does not open in sandboxed FF but instead opens in new unsandboxed Firefox.

In the past I have solved this by:

Open Sandboxie
Go to Sandbox Settings > Resource Access > Window Access
Clcik "Add Program" button: and select firefox.exe
Clcik "Add" button: paste in "FirefoxMessageWindow"

But this no longer works.

Please help.

  • I have the free version so option 1 - paid version is not what I have now and so is not helpful.

Option 2 is not practical because Thunderbird HAS to save its emails to hard disk, you cannot sand box Thunderbird.

So neither options are helpful to me.

Furthermore, I explained how it used to work in Sandboxie, and now this does not work.

    You did not address this.

Did you remove this feature from the new version?

The settings I described that used to work in Sandboxie can still be set in 5.3.

Since they can still be set, why are they not working?

  • Hi Joe,

To Sandbox an email client, please have a look at these:
    https://www.sandboxie.com/EmailProtection
    https://www.sandboxie.com/ApplicationsSettings#email

You can set your email client to save emails to your drive, here are the test email steps (I have copied them for your convenience as the site does not properly load -www.sandboxie.com/TestEmailConfiguration):

    Sandboxie - Test Email Configuration
    Test and Confirm Configuration

Sandboxie offers quick configuration for most email programs. Please see www.sandboxie.com/ApplicationsSettings for more information.

After completing the email configuration, you may want to test it to make sure that new emails will not be lost when you delete the sandbox. To do that, follow these steps:

Disable Internet access in the sandbox. This is a precaution measure, to make sure that your sandboxed email program cannot retrieve new mail messages before you confirm the configuration is correct:
Open www.sandboxie.com/RestrictionsSettings, then click Block All Programs, and finally click OK.

Run your email program under Sandboxie. (You can use the Run Email Reader< command from the "TrayIconMenu"of SandboxieControl

Compose a test draft message to yourself. Don't send it.

Quit your email program. If your email program suggests to send the test message, disregard the suggestion.

    Delete the sandbox.

Run your email program normally, that is, outside the supervision of Sandboxie.

Confirm that you can use the normal (unsandboxed) instance of the mail program to see and edit the test message you created.

If the email message that you created in a sandboxed instance of your email program is also accessible in the normal (unsandboxed) instance, even after the sandbox has been deleted, then the configuration is correct.

When done, re-enable Internet access in the sandbox (https://www.sandboxie.com/RestrictionsSettings#internet)

Regarding your other question, the only changes made are listed here:
