Safeguard Issues with SSD drive Laptops

Hello,

We have about 15 laptops that we purchased through Dell with 128gb SSD hard drives.  I have installed SafeGuard Easy 5.60 Standalone on them.  They encrypt ok, but after a few restarts, performance starts to get worse.  When I attempt to modify the installation at all (remove the policy, or remove the software), Windows explorer locks up and the system is unusable.

Also, there are times where the system is running ok, and then just locks up.  This is all due to the encryption software because I have tested the systems without it, and they perform ok.  It is also worth noting, that we have the same encryption software on HDD and they work flawlessly with it.

Does anyone have any ideas?

The systems are Dell Latitude E6420's with Intel i7 processors and Win7 32 bit professional.

Thank You!

Patrick

  • Look at this topic - there You can find link to ssd disks supported by SGN.

  • I have a couple of Dell E5420 laptops with SSDs here, as well as a few third party (mostly Crucial or Intel) SSDs added to them, and none of them have had any problems with SGN v5.60.1.

We tested some of the SSDs (the 3rd party ones) under v5.50.8, and the performance was terrible, but under v5.60.1, the immediate performance drop wasn't as drastic and they have stayed pretty fast.  I can't really say for the Dell OEM SSDs, since we started those on v5.60.1, but I haven't heard any complaints from users that their machines are unstable or crashing.

Are you using v5.60.0 or v5.60.1, and if you are using the v5.60.0 release, have you tried upgrading to v5.60.1?

  • Sorry I have not responded!

    We are now using 6.0.

When I worked with a rep from Sophos, he advised that I needed to do Fast Initial Encryption with the SSD's, and then install the Antivirus software.  Doing it in that order has been screwing up the system, causing random freezes and causing the Antivirus software to stop working properly (Symantec Endpoint Protection 12).

Now, when I install Symantec first (and all other software), then do the encryption, the laptops perform better.  I am hoping that is the case, but it is taking me about 2 dayst to test the laptop each time I change something.  This is a very strange issue!

  • Hi Pgraham,

SafeGuard Device Encryption, as of version 6, uses hardware-accelerated AES on computers equipped with a CPU that supports Intel AES-NI (AES - New Instructions) to improve performance and user experience. This option is automatically checked and enabled by default - which might be the reason for the performance improvements you see compared to version 5.60.x. :)

Please note that the full disk encryption of solid-state drives should always be accomplished using SafeGuard Enterprise' Fast Initial Encryption feature.
Please see KBA 11334 "How to protect data on a solid-state drive (SSD) with SafeGuard Device Encryption" for more details  http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/113334.aspx .

I've not seen any incompatibilities from SGN6 and SEP12 right after installation and would recommend to open a support request for this issue so we can help you to solve this situation.

    Cheers,

    Chris
