TAR import fails

Hi folks,

I have read the various articles any getting any closer to a solution.

https://community.sophos.com/sophos-xg-firewall/f/discussions/136793/export-edit-import-selective-configuration

I have created a new tar file after editing the exported one in MAC tar, I have tried various naming formats but to no avail.

Thoughts please.

Ian

I tried exporting a file, then using MAC tar creating a new file which I tried to import and it failed. Not good.

  • Hi Ian, I just succeeded in exporting and importing an IP Host file.
I exported only the IP hosts, edited one entry, deleted all the other entries.

    How did i achieve this?
    1. i have 7zip installed on my PC and have .tar associated with 7zip
    2. i have Notepad++ installed and have .xml associated with it

After downloading the .tar export i just double click on it and it opens in 7zip, i then open the subfolder and double click on the entities.xml file which opens in Notepad++.
Once finished editing the xml i save it with Notepad++, close the file, close Notepad++. 7zip then asks if the entities.xml in the tar file should be updated. Select yes, close the tar file and close 7zip.

This .tar was recognized by the SFOS importer...

    [corrected some typos]

  • Hi Peter-Paul,

I use Mac archive app to extract the xml file and then used textedit it to edit the file. Save it and then tar it.

The issue is really what format does the Mac tar create that the XG does not like. I have extracted a file from an export without changing it, tarred it then tried it into import to the XG and that fails with not being a recognised format.

So I am at a loss what to do with the Mac. I do have PC I can try this process in and see what happens. It will need to extract software I think.

  • Thank you, I have a copy of that instruction in English and while the file is created it is not recognised by the XG.

  • Could there be a rights issue on the .tar you generate?
When i download the tar file it shows a numerical value of 0644

  • Thank you for the extra thoughts. I will try using the tar build with keep the original security settings.

  • Update.

    1/. permissions did not work.

2/. tried windup - does not convert to tar format

3/. tried winrar supposedly does tar format but does not work

4/. tried online car to tar convertor - XG still does not like the file.

Conclusion, there is something wrong with my XG installation, it will reimport unmodified files, but will not import a new tar file created form the unmodified xml file.

The proces works for others, so what am I doing wrong?

  • Seems to be a file issue.

I can import it successfully with this format:

    Above is Ians file.
Below is mine. I have a root file directory with the Entities.xml in it.
