Dear experts,
what about Java license fees (embedded within the SMC App-Server) next year?
Please clarify this to us.
Thank you,
Till

Hi,
due to the reason that Oracle is introducing license fees to run Java in 2019 we have to identify all systems which have java embedded.
Hi Till,
We are aware of this issue. With Sophos Mobile 9.0 we will change to OpenJDK, which does not have the issue.
If you are using Sophos Mobile 8.x, you still can continue to use it also next year, but of course you will not get any security updates any longer. As always, upgrade to the latest and greatest Sophos mobile version is highly recommended
Thomas
Hi Thomas,
thank you for clarification - does this mean Sophos covers the Java license fees for the releases up to version 9 - or is this issue of the end user/customer?
What about the release date of SMC 9.0? We are planning to upgrade, but first we have to upgrade server OS to get to 8.6.
Thank you!
Till
OpenJDK is not from Oracle and therefore not affected by the licensing change. No license fees.
For more details, please check the official web site: http://openjdk.java.net/faq/
We plan to release Sophos Mobile 9.0 in Q1 next year
Best regards, Thomas
Hi Thomas,
thank you for clarification - but what about license fees between the gap (Jan 2018 up to release of SMC 9.0) when customers run SMC 8.6.x? Who covers these license fees? We have a huge amount of SMC running on Windows Server 2008 R2, so we have first to upgrade to Windows Server 2016 - this will generate huge workloads.
Hi Till,
According to our legal team, we are good here. Oracle ask for a license for future versions and will not provide updates for older versions. But this does not change any already released code under the old license as we used it in Sophos Mobile 8.6.
Have a nice weekend, Thomas
No license fee as OpenJDK isn't from Oracle. Wait for the Sophos Mobile 9.0.
