Exchange store scanning picking up emails that no longer exist?

Unusual issue with Exchange store scanning, an email with an encrypted attachment was sent to a number of users, due to the encryption, PureMessage was unable to scan it and generated an alert email to administrators which is the configured behavior.

The email has since been removed from all mailboxes, deleted completely but PureMessage is still generating the email alert for all the original recipients.

Any suggestions on a solution?
