Can't Get Email Notifications to Work

When ever I attempt to get email notifications working on our XG units, using the same mail server and authentication we've always used for the UTM v9's, it returns the following error:

Does anyone know why we may be experiencing this issue? It works flawlessly for all our UTM v9's.

  • Hi Stuart,

This error message defines an incorrect Connection Security configured in the Mail Server Settings.

Please find the link for configuring:

    https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-US/123616

Let me know if that helps.

    Thanks

    Sachin

  • Hi Sachin,

Thanks for the reply, but that links doesn't work for me. All I get is:

"Application Error: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open database "kbsophosfirewall" requested by the login. The login failed. Application Error: Operation is not allowed when the object is closed. Application Error: Operation is not allowed when the object is closed. • Hi Stuart,

I think our Server is down.

There are a number of reasons why you wouldn't receive Email notifications. These include connectivity issues between XG and Mail Server, incorrect configuration of Mail Server in XG, etc.

Following are steps through which you can troubleshoot Mail Server configuration and connectivity.

Step 1: Check Mail Server Configuration in XG

Login to XG Web Admin Console as an Administrator.

Go to System > Administration> Notification and check the following:

    - Mail Server IP Address/FQDN and Port
    - Authentication Credentials, if any
    - Email Settings

Step 2: Confirm the information configured.

Confirm the Security connection type you are using with Mail Server.

What is the SMTP port you are using on Mail Server.

Are you trying to configure Gmail for Email notification ?

After configuring this, can you send me a Screenshot to verify the settings? This will be more helpful.

    Thanks

    Sachin

  • Hi all,

I had this problem at the start with Copernicus and is currently open as a bug wherein the XG doesn't actually support/has a bug with LOGIN/PLAIN auth with TLS on/off (don't quote this as I may have paraphrased incorrectly) but I will get the exact bug number as soon as I can.

What I had to do to make it work is (dependant on environment) set up a receive connector which only allows the SFOS IP address to talk without TLS and using no authentication and anonymous logon. That was for Exchange however most Enterprise grade Email Servers should have the capability to do this.

On the XG, you turn off TLS and disable authentication. I have successfully made this work to O365 and Exchange and other users have had similar success.

    Hope that helps
