Sophos XG Home and Wireless section: remove?

HI,

So I've just installed Sophos XG Home and I can see the Wireless Tab is still present and some Wifi networks are still defined. I understand that XG Home does not support the Sophos AP wireless hardware, so should I just delete all the wireless networks in there as I plan to connect my own access point to an interface port, but I understand I will need to log into the access point itself to setup all the wireless stuff, but can use the XG Home for firewall control on that interface and give it a "WiFi" zone. Also the computer I set it up on does not have any wireless hardware.

If XG Home doesn't support AP then it should just hide that section totally (I assume I have Home, I started the setup in Eval mode and entered the license later, license page says "Evaluating" until 2999).

Regards

D

  • I do not have any Sophos AP or APX wireless hardware. I am using Sophos XG Home license.

  • Oh I misunderstood, you meant the in-built wireless, right ?

    Thanks & Regards,

  • Hi,

you misunderstand, the home licence supports Sophos APs. While you can remove the default Wifi configuration you cannot remove the Wireless tab. You can create your own zones and name them what you like, the wifi zone does not offer any special benefits from other zones.

If you are using the home licence on Sophos XG/XGS hardware you cannot remove the inbuilt WLAN, you can disable it.

  • Oh, thanks I didn't know Home supported AP hardware, most of the doc online seem to imply it didn't. Means if my work every gets rid of their Sophos AP, it might find a new home.

  • That would depend on the model of AP. Some of the AP models are going to be end-of-life in December and they will no longer be able to be managed by the firewall. Now it is recommended to use the free Sophos Central Wireless.

Sophos Firewall OS (XG Series only)

The current expectation is that the latest maintenance release (MR) as of March 2023 will be the last firmware version to include management of the EOL access points, however, this is subject to change.

    • A few months before the EOL date: a banner will be shown under Wireless Protection in the user interface to alert admins to the upcoming EOL date.
    • After the final software release: access points managed in SFOS will no longer be visible and can no longer be managed.

AP Series access points are not supported on XGS Series hardware.

    Sophos UTM (SG Series)

There is currently no schedule for any changes to AP Series support in Sophos UTM.
