XG license/features?

Hi,

I'm currently evaluating the new XG firewall software. Always missed the zone concept in the SG series and stayed with other vendors. The new version seems promising. So I have three license questions.

a) Do all XG hardware models offer the same feauters? With only some CPU & interface constraints? Or are there any other enforced software/license limitations?

b) If I would go for a VM based solution. What are the user limits for? E.g. mailboxes scanned, or concurrent SSL connections, ...?

c) And maybe confusing: It seems to be cheaper to buy a SG series + required licenses and opt for the free XG upgrade. Is this this really possible or are there any disadvantages?

Thanks in advance.

Markus

  • Hi Markus,

    Thanks for choosing Sophos.

    a) Do all XG hardware models offer the same feauters? With only some CPU & interface constraints? Or are there any other enforced software/license limitations?

Yes, all XG hardware offers same feature, only enhancement will be with the Sizing guide and internal hardware capability.

    b) If I would go for a VM based solution. What are the user limits for? E.g. mailboxes scanned, or concurrent SSL connections, ...?

If you are opting for a VM based solution, the threshold to any module and services will rest upon the hardware capability to which VM is configured.

    c) And maybe confusing: It seems to be cheaper to buy a SG series + required licenses and opt for the free XG upgrade. Is this this really possible or are there any disadvantages?

Now, that's tricky and interesting. But SG series are explicitly structured for UTM 9 Firmware, alongside XG series are dedicated for SF-OS Copernicus Firmware, hence concluding over the latest hardware is better.

Let us know if you have any further questions.
