ASG 110/120 upgrade to V8 with home license

Hi everyone

I have been using ASG since 2004 but only till today I owned my first hardware ASG 110/120

It is running V7 so I decided to upgrade it to V8, I am surprised that the software security gateway installer does not allow installation on ASG hardware.

NVM I am downloading hardware image now but my questions is, can I use home license on hardware asg ?

    The hardware ISO install won't accept a home license as valid, but there's a trick.  Go ahead and install the hardware ISO.  Now you will need to log into the shell (console or SSH) with root priviledges, then rename /etc/ASG.  After you do this and reboot, the appliance will accept a home license.

    that is good to know, I actually boot it off a Suse Linux CD, removed all the partition and now software image installation started already, but thanks for your reply.

    That's another way to do it.  [:)]  Hopefully you have one of the newer 110/120 units with 1GB of RAM, as that's the minimum needed for V8.  If you have an older unit with 512MB, you'd be much better off sticking with 7.5x from a performance perspective.

    the one I got is V3, with 1G RAM, I am thinking of buying a 2G DIMM but going to check the load first


    mmm, 63% now with just some simple firewall basic NAT, I think I will get a 2G DIMM.

    This little unit is so noisy ;( I hardly hear anything from my HP SFF PC running ASG but this little unit makes a lot noise and when I have 3 or 4 download, CPU hits 100% [[:(]] [[:(]]

    I suspect you have a misconfiguration.  I remember when I put "External (Network)" in 'Local networks' in 'Intrusion Prevention' - that wasn't good!

    - We get to learn and understand the hardware better.
    - Chances of us deploying at work is a lot more higher now that we understand it.
    - No need to risk trying different hardware which is a real pain to check and ensure it would work.

    Why make people go and go all these rename etc?

    Seriously dont see the reason, on one hand they are smart to give home license whereby we would deploy at work now that we know it is good, on the other hand they make the hardware such as pain, Both in terms of Buying and the RAM is forever a joke.

    I'm betting Astaro doesn't make that much money selling the appliances themselves, the bulk of the profit is from selling the support subscription so it wouldn't be beneficial to sell to home users. To be honest you are not missing much or anything from using the software license on your own hardware compared to using the appliance and like you mention they are limited with the amount of RAM that is installed.

    What about installing the software version? Plug in a portable CD-player with Astaro-iso burned into a CD and reboot?

    I am planning to buy an ASG 110 rev 4 for home use (home license). If it is possible of course.
