Software Install on ASG Hardware

I'm trying to boot a V7 or V8 software install on an ASG (in order to use the home license). However when I boot off the usb-dvd nothing happens (blank LCD display and no hard drive activity).

There is no vga output so I'm not sure if it's waiting for some kind of keyboard input. I did connect a usb keyboard and then hit enter when I thought the menu would be on screen but again saw no hard drive activity etc.

It's not a problem with the usb dvd-rom because I downloaded the hardware appliance and that installed just fine (but obviously it doesn't work with a home license).

Thanks for any help on this.

edit: read some other topics and I'm going to try either wiping the hard disk or replacing it. Back later with good news I hope [;)]

edit2: replaced hd but still no luck [:(]

    Hi,

    The ISO for the ASG appliances runs an unattended install, however if you are trying to install the software version on a ASG appliance to use the home license you will need to have a monitor and keyboard attached to the ASG. If you search the forums someone might have posted the steps to enter on the keyboard if you do not have a monitor attached to get you through the install process.

    Thanks for taking the time to reply. I've searched the forum but couldn't find the sequence. I'll have to install it on a VM and note down each key press. My only concern is that it won't be the same.
    I don't suppose these vga cables are easy to come by separately since they are non-standard and different for each machine? Might check with a reseller if the blind install goes wrong.

    Nice find. That's really good info. It's an ASG 425, but from what I've read only the ASG 220 uses a different pin out. So all the others should be the same - pin1 to pin1 etc.

    My blind install isn't going great so I'll probably try making a cable. Before I do that though I noticed that the XFX Low Profile Graphics Card Kit was mentioned in relation to the ASG 220 but could not be used due to the connector being too large. I thought that graphics card headers were always wired to standard (pin1 to pin1) so why was it thought suitable for the 220? I'm just hoping it will be of use to me [:D]

    Btw I tried a reseller (who was very nice) but didn't have the part. I also contacted Astaro directly and was told they don't stock parts of discontinued models (which is odd considering it's less than 5 yrs old :S).

    Just thought I'd update this with the keystrokes for the blind install (there is one more option than when I installed in vm. It is after the interface selection. I don't know what it is but 'enter' is the answer [;)]

    ASG V8.1 (UK English install)

    1) Boot off cd
    2) Press enter (when keyboard num lock is on)
    ---Wait 60 seconds (keyboard num lock will turn off)---
    3) Press enter
    ---Wait 30 seconds---
    4) Press enter
    5) Press up once (to highlight UK English)
    6) Press enter
    7) Press down 11 times (to highlight Europe)
    8) Press enter
    9) Press down 23 times (to highlight UK)
    10) Press enter
    11) Press enter
    12) Press enter
    13) Press backspace 11 times (to delete IP)
    14) Type '192.168.0.1' (or whatever you want the web admin IP to be.
    15) Press enter
    16) Press enter
    ---Wait 15 minutes---
    17) Press enter (cd should eject)

    Reboot

    I was just wondering... did you manage to get this done?

    I ask simply because I am in exaclty the same situation as you.

    I have a ASG220 that I purchased on ebay, and I cannot use it at the moment.

    Any help would be appreciated!!

    just simply download and install the hardware image without user input.
    when it is installet login via ssh and search the "asg" file in the etc folder and delete it.
    reboot and voila your hardware astaro is now a software astaro and you can install the home license.

    Did you get it installed? 

    I have the 525 w Nat License. Running like a champ non stop.

    I had to edit the bios to boot to USB first. 

    USB Keyboard, VGA Monitor, USB Rom

    Then I dbaned the HD wiped clean

    Installed the ISO software version

    Ping each etho as there were not numbered with the face plate of the box correctly afterwards. Just mapped the software to faceplate. IE: Face plate eto1 = eth7 software... 

    PS The LCD face is also DOA w/ software install (normal)

    Hope your up and running.
