  • Hello,

this is a very unspecific error code and can have quite a number of reasons. So please give us more details. Was this a fresh install. re-install or an upgrade? Which version? Which method of installation - standalone package, setup from the CID or Protect Computers? And whatever other information you might have.

I had a "Could not start .... 0x80004005" error recently but it's history was probably quite different from yours. Anyway I my case the "simple" solution was installing Sophos Anti-Virus using Sophos Anti-Virus.msi (just right clicking and selecting Install) from %PROGRAMFILES%\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Cache\savxp

  • I also faced this evil error. I done all things ican except machine format, I installed from msi. also..as well as i remove all sophos softwares including registries.

But When i am install newly Sophos Antivirus doesn't start ..I think one sophos registry effected by virus. tThis is the massive bug of Sophos. I email this to sophos help desk too.

  • Most of the time we see this issue, it is due to permissions on the machine.

A good troubleshooting step is to run process monitor then attempt to start the service (or install the msi).

    Then check the log.

A good starting search is "access denied" - without the quotes :)

  • Reinstalling the Microsoft Installer (or upgrading to v4.5) most of the times resolves MSI issues on the machine... which is the usually the underlying reason for failed installations of all kind (including Sophos).
