Install standalone without handing out user and pwd

Hello, have home users that want to install sophos on home PC. Problem: can't use switches to install standalone, how do I allow them to install client without giving out username and password for update access?

  • Hi,

For a few home users, one simple method would be to tell them to install without specifying details.  You could then provide them with a copy of:

    "C:\ProgramData\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Config\iconn.cfg"

which is already configured for updating and get them to swap it over.  Maybe even a batch file that echoes the contents of this out to a file and copies it into place.  One could argue that an obfuscated form of this password is as useful as the cleartext version given its purpose but then they could always find it anyway.

For a considerable number of home users I would suggest creating your own web CID and using and article such as:

    http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/67372.html

but this might be too much work for your needs but would allow you to pass the parameters to setup.exe.

Hope this could offer a simple solution to your problem.

    Thanks,

    JAK

  • @Ec123456789: Are we talking about the Sophos download credentials?

Have used all variants. Copying is the simplest solution but requires a little knowledge, scripting or packing it in an executable

requires that you determine the correct target location.

    C:\ProgramData\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Config\iconn.cfg

or C:\Program Files\... for WinXP (nitpicking as always).

If you have laptop users you probably want to create a WebCID for them anyway. It can also be used by home users. Creating a standalone installer for home (and off-site) users is not too hard and gives you the chance of pre-defining the configurations (not only update). This has already been discussed in this forum.
