Trouble Using University's remote client AV

I've downloaded the Sophos client from my University's IS portal and installed it on my Mac. The guide on the Uni's website says the primary server should already be filled in but mine wasn't so I entered it manually by looking at their screenshot. When I select update now it shows me update is in progress by the loading bar moving and the number of files installed keeps increasing. Once the loading bar reached 100% I get told update failed!!? I've tried installing it twice and updating several times with the same outcome...

What I am not understanding is that I installed it on my Windows machine and updated no problem (although the update URL was of course different for Windows platform)

I'm running OS X 10.6.3 and Windows 7. The link to download the Mac client says 10.2+(inc. Mac for intel) so it shouldn't be a problem as the link to download the Windows version only mentions up to Vista yet as I said installed fine on my Windows 7.

Is anyone able to help?

Thanks

  • Hi Smush,

What is the exact version of Sophos AV that you have installed?

Although it mentions that the older software is for Mac OS 10.2+  The only version of SAV which is supported on Mac OS 10.6+ is SAV 7.1, which is usually labelled as supporting 10.4+

A little confusing, I know, but essentially, if you have a 10.6 system with any version lower than SAV 7.1 on there, then it will not work correctly and you should contact your university IT department for an updated version.

    Regards,

    Stephen.

  • Hi,

sorry for the delay in posting I have had trouble logging in to the foum. For some reason I can only login when I'm on my home network and not the University's...

Yes, University provides SAV 4.8.1 which as you have said won't work for OS X 10.6 so I've sent an email to my IT department with the issue you have explained here.

Is there not a way for me to download the remote desktop AV client from this website and put my University's AV update server in the relevant field as surely the updates would be the same regardless of OS version? If not, does it cost the University to provide a working version of Sophos for OS X 10.6 if they already have a license?

  • Hello,

as surely the updates would be the same regardless of OS version

No (or better: no) - while the IDEs are the same for all products/platforms AutoUpdate also includes updating of the software (i.e. scanning engine, UI, management system and autoupdate itself.

does it cost the University to provide a working version

No - a valid license always includes the latest products.
