managed by Central or SEC? There are two main update failures - either the download or the install of one or more components failed.
Update logs are the ALUpdate logs in %ProgramData%\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Logs\, Install (Uninstall, CustomActions) logs are in %windor%\Temp\. That all endpoints show the same error suggests an updating problem - do you update via UNC or HTTP? What is the error message?

in the future please start a new thread for another problem.
AD Sync with automatic install performs the same procedure as Protect Computers. If the latter works the former should too. Please note though that automatic install is not retried - if the first attempt for a certain computer has failed no further attempt will be made.

automatic protection is attempted when a computer is sync'ed with (i.e. imported from) AD for the first time. Automatic protection fails when the computer isn't running or not yet configured to allow protection from the console at this time. SEC should display an error message for the computer in this case. As said, no further attempt is made if the first one fails.
