Change of Motherboard - Encryption query

Hi there

Client has a laptop that needs a motherboard replacement - if Dell replace with the exact same make of motherboard - the user will be asked for the Bitlocker recovery key upon Bootup.

Do we need to then decrypt and re-encrypt the laptop for the new TPM to store the new decryption keys?

Yes. You will not need to decrypt or encrypt again. You can double check all is well with the “new” TPM by using TPM.MSC (as Admin) and also using “manage-bde -status” at an elevated command prompt.

Hi. If the laptop still boots I would suggest you suspend Bitlocker before installation of the new motherboard. If this is not possible you WILL need the existing recovery key for it. A new one will be generated once the laptop has then successfully booted into Windows with the new board fitted.

Thanks - the motherboard was changed over there and user required a recovery key to boot. Will Sophos update the TPM on the laptops new motherboard automatically without decrypting/re-encrypting?
