Change of Motherboard - Encryption query

Hi there

Client has a laptop that needs a motherboard replacement - if Dell replace with the exact same make of motherboard - the user will be asked for the Bitlocker recovery key upon Bootup.

Do we need to then decrypt and re-encrypt the laptop for the new TPM to store the new decryption keys?

Thanks

Gerry

  • Hi. If the laptop still boots I would suggest you suspend Bitlocker before installation of the new motherboard. If this is not possible you WILL need the existing recovery key for it. A new one will be generated once the laptop has then successfully booted into Windows with the new board fitted.
