A Pause button on Sophos Virus Removal Tool

Hi,

I'm using the new versione of your Virus Removal Tool (VRT). I used your Anti-rootkit tool in the past.

I'd like to have a button on the VRT to cause a pause during it execution  if this is technically possible.

Why?

When this tool run my pc slows down and some other operations like launching another program take too much time to be  executed. I'd like in these cases but in other cases too to pause VRT for while and restore it later.

Thank you.

  • Hi,

You can pause scans and have them run at a lower priority in the full product but this tool is really designed for scaning a machine to clean it up.  It's not a replacement for a full product with on-access protection.

That being said, if you wanted to do something similar to pause, you could suspend the process: "SVRTservice.exe" .  To do so, start a scan, lauch Process Explorer (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653 ), find SVRTservice.exe , right click and choose "Suspend".   You will see that the interface (SVRTgui.exe ) will show the scan has stopped.  If you right click again on the process "SVRTservice.exe"  you can choose to resume it.  The interface will then show scanning has continued.  A bit of a hack but it should give you back the resources.  Likewise, you could also reduce the priority of the "SVRTservice.exe " process and see if that improves things.  This can be done in Taskmanager or Process Explorer.

    Regards,
