How to speed up a full scan on my Mac

I started a full scan of my Mac on March 6th at 11:19   It is March 10th at 7:44 and it has gone 12616764 of 27021776 items.

I changed my configuration to the beta change designed to fix an issue with Time Machine, but would have been happy to tell Sophos to ignore Time Machine.   I tried dragging it to my configuration page, but that didn't work.

I had a Trojan in an earlier alert but couldn't find any way to delete it other than deleting the file the alert pointed to.   When I started the scan, there were two alerts, now there are three that have to be removed manually - two of them are on Time Machine, and one is in my junk.md file.    When I select How To, I find instructions on how to download a file that would remove them, provided I was on a Windows machine.   So I guess those alerts will remain forever, especially if it takes a week of my computer not sleeping in order to scan again.

I have a 3.2GH Intel Core i5 with 8GB memory, a Fusion Drive, and a USB backup disk with macOS Sierra.

What should I do to speed up my full scans, and remove my Trojans?
