Genieo

I have a Genieo (virus) quarantined on my MacBook Pro. But Sophos cannot clean it up and wants me to clean up manually. Has anyone else had this problem and can advise on how to clean it up? Also... is it a problem for Macs?

  • Hi Bob - thanks for your reply. I cannot navigate to the path because the Genieo is no longer showing in Sophos quarantine. I downloaded Malwarebytes and ran a scan and nothing showed. Then I shut down and restarted the Mac. When I checked quarantine the Genie had been cleared. I ran both Malwarebytes and Sophos scans. Again nothing showed. Do I assume that the Genieo has gone or could it still be lurking. As ever, I have to ask whether this type of virus affects Macs. The Sophos anti-malware/adware software (which I was offered) is only applicable to PCs. Any thoughts? Brian

  • Hi Brian,

It sounds like it has been removed from your system. I have found this article to remove it manually if it is still there, however. Genieo is not so much a virus as it is an pua (potentially unwanted application). Sophos Home is available for Macs, but it is good practice to not have two antivirus programs operating at once. Hope this helped!

    Thank you,

    Bob
