I received a phone call asking to verify my domain info?

A few days ago, out of the blue, I received a phone call from someone identifying themselves as being from my domain registrar. They called me by my previous name (the one on the registry, which I bought before I remarried), and asked if they could verify my personal information. I cautiously answered "yes", listening closely for anything that wasn't already public knowledge on a WHOIS search.

They asked to verify my address, mostly. Nothing "personal" like password or financial info. BUT, the call still skeeved me out. Why would my domain registrar take the time to call me up when I haven't done anything online that involves my registry? I haven't changed anything in years. (I've purchased a long-term domain plan.)

The guy told me that there was some new law or something requiring them to verify information.

Is this correct?

  • Hello Kelly,

I have Caller ID on my phone, and to verify their identity I could just call that number back and see who answers. So I did, and sure enough, it was Register.com

Did you check the number with a trustworthy source? Just calling the number back proves nothing - someone posing as another company for malicious purposes is probably smart enough to answer the call (possibly even based on your Caller ID) with the "correct" name.

It's too bad we have to be so suspicious all the time!

You've been caught off-guard which, as is known, has an adverse effect on thinking :smileyhappy:. I'm sure it won't happen next time. Being prepared doesn't mean you'll have to think of scams every time the phone rings.

Thanks for sharing this - it is a good reminder for all of us.
