I received a phone call asking to verify my domain info?

A few days ago, out of the blue, I received a phone call from someone identifying themselves as being from my domain registrar. They called me by my previous name (the one on the registry, which I bought before I remarried), and asked if they could verify my personal information. I cautiously answered "yes", listening closely for anything that wasn't already public knowledge on a WHOIS search.

They asked to verify my address, mostly. Nothing "personal" like password or financial info. BUT, the call still skeeved me out. Why would my domain registrar take the time to call me up when I haven't done anything online that involves my registry? I haven't changed anything in years. (I've purchased a long-term domain plan.)

The guy told me that there was some new law or something requiring them to verify information.

Is this correct?

    Law or something - if it's important they should take the time to explain.

    They did explain in more detail, but as far as I'm concerned they could have made it up, which is why I don't remember exactly what it was they said.

    I feel a little sheepish about this post, because as I was just writing the above response, it occurred to me that I have Caller ID on my phone, and to verify their identity I could just call that number back and see who answers. So I did, and sure enough, it was Register.com.

    However, I probably should have thought of that BEFORE answering his questions, thinking to tell him I'd investigate his number a bit before I'd agree to a conversation.

    Next time. It's too bad we have to be so suspicious all the time!
