I've been evaluating the Sophos Antivirus product on my Mac Pro and found that the Intercheck realtime scanner uses an insanely high level of cpu upon reboot. If I let it run for around 15 minutes it cools off but it slows the boot up process down immensely.
The intercheck process runs at a very high level again when I run Repair Permissions inside of Disk Utility. Instead of taking a few minutes to complete it can take several hours. I think this tool should be added to the antivirus engine's ignore list so less informed users don't have to deal with the wait.
