Mac Mail taking 5 minutes to launch

macbook pro, big sur - when I start mac mail it can take 5 minutes to open mail - sophos seems to be involved as there is lots of activity shown in task manager.   Yes, I have lots of mail but seriously this is a pain.

    I would like to ask what version of Sophos AV you’re running at this time? You can find this information by opening the "Sophos Endpoint Self Help" tool and looking under the "System" tab. Do you know if the issue only started up recently, or have similar symptoms been present in the past?

    As an initial step, you can try enrolling the affected device in the "Early Access Program" for macOS. The EAP release includes some changes to the way scanning occurs. Mainly the scanning of network traffic. 

    In previous versions of Sophos AV for macOS, all network traffic generated would need to pass through the "NetTransparentProxy" which would become inundated with requests causing perceived slowdowns to web browsing and general network interactions. With the EAP version, network traffic generated from non-browser applications will be handled differently.

  • Sophos Home Premium.  Can't find Endpoint Self Help tool anywhere. Nor does EAP show up anywhere.  This has been going on for months.  When I upgraded to big sur, I cleaned out a bunch of stuff, turned off sophos and mail started up normally.  I turned sophos back on - and for a week or so, it still worked normally, then got slower and slower and slower.  Varous sophos programs seem quite chatty even when nothing is being downloaded to the computer.

    The guidance above, will not apply to the version of Sophos AV you’re running, as the options to join the Early Access Program are specific to the Enterprise version of Sophos Endpoint.
