Hello,

can somebody elaborate difference in detection engines/security between UTM and Web gateway? I am interested in security differences.

  • Sorry for the late response

The UTM has many features above and beyond the web appliance. The web appliance only does the UTM feature "Web Protection" Web appliance is not a router or firewall or any of the other things the UTM is.

Comparing the UTM web protection feature to the Web Appliance, they both use the same engine so they are very similar performance wise.

Because the web appliance is dedicated to one function the interface is simpler.
The UTM can have 2 virus scanners to scan the traffic which some would consider better, some would consider performance impacting. The sophos anti virus is faster ;) Security wise as long as the UTM is using the sophos virus engine the web appliance will catch anything the UTM will catch and vice versa.
The web appliance has a global policy for HTTPS scanning where you can exclude certain sites from HTTPS scanning.
The UTM you can turn on HTTPS scanning for one site at a time (or all of them and have exclusions like the web appliance)
Deployment of the two products is very different because the UTM is usually the router, so all web traffic is passing through it anyway, the web appliance you have to tell clients or your router where to send the web traffic.

TLDR: performance is the same, web appliance interface is easier.
