Google Instant

Last week, Google launched 'Google Instant', a feature on their main search page that displays search results dynamically as you type.

I'd be interested to hear peoples feedback and experiences with this. How does this impact your organization? What concerns do you have about the extra bandwidth this might consume? Are you concerned about the way that results to partial words or typos might be manipulated to present unwanted content to users?

Are you a Google advertiser? What impact will this have on your Adwords usage or on the effectiveness of your ad placements?

Finally, do you use the Search Terms reporting functionality on the Sophos Web Appliance or on other web filtering products? If so, what impact is it having on the reports you're seeing? Do you really want to see every sub-string search as a separate set of search terms? Is this reporting still valuable to you if users can claim they didn't really mean to search on a word they typed in error?

If you have answers for these questions, or any other observations on Google Instant, please respond to this thread.

Thanks,

  • Rich,

We use the search terms and it has instigated some interesting conversations. Searching for a hotel in Cockermouth got one senior manager in hot water until I worked out what was happening. I still think that the reporting is useful.

At present, we have not noticed any massive jump in bandwidth as a result of this change.

Sorry that this is off topic, but just thought I would slide it in:-

One change I would like to make to the web reports is to add the category of the site on the reports. When looking through the activity search by user, I can see the sites that were blocked, but not which category they are. If I see that a user has been blocked on an adult category, it is not easy to work out what site triggered the block.

    Thanks

    Tim
