Pure Msg 4 won't sync with AD

New installation of Pure Msg 4 on Server 2012 with Exchange 2013.

Detects and verifies with AD fine. But a sync errors with "Synchronize failed! Unexpected error.".

Have tried different server names (using the server name alone and with the domain name that is detected automatically), different ports (389 and 3268), static IP address entry instead of server name, checked config with the config tool.

Everything appears to be correct according to Sophos' directions.
