Install Puremessage for Exchange 2010

Hi we have a network with:

2 Exchange Server 2010 Mailbox Servers

2 Exchange Server 2010 Client Access Servers

1 Websense Email Security

Currently Firewall has been configured to pass all inbound SMTP to the Websense server which will then clean the spams and forward it to the Exchange Mailbox Servers; similarly outbound from Exchange server are passed to the Websense server then to external.

I am looking to replace Websense with the Sophos Puremessage. I have a trial copy been downloaded. I have a fresh Windows Server 2008 R2 been setup where Sophos Puremessage will be installed.

Going through the Startup guide it doesnt makes it clear that where do i install Sophos Puremessage. I can see that I have option to install Admin Console in this new Server whereas for "PureMessage service" it is prompting "PureMessage service requires either Microsoft Exchange or Microsoft IIS SMTP Service, or the SMTP-Server feature in Microsfot windows Server 2008.". As far as I remember I never had to install Microsoft IIS SMTP Service or the SMTP-Server feature in the Websense Email Server.

Your help will be much appreciated on this, thank you.

  • Hi Bickyz,

I guess you're going to use the Sophos Pure Message as the email gateway (for replacing the Websense) and not to install the Pure Message on the Exchange servers.

Since Pure Message works by scanning and filtering the smtp traffic then it needs the smtp service to be installed.

But unfortunately it does not come with its own smtp service, so you need to install the smtp service from the windows 2008 feature.

Please check this document ,  your deployment scenario is called "Deploying PureMessage to an IIS SMTP gateway"

    regards,
