Encrypted PDF and iPhone

Wasn't real sure where to post this and it really isn't a Sophos problem.  I am not that versed with smartphones yet.  I am the ultra procrastinator and refuse to upgrade and buy into more cell phone usage plans, etc.  That is a whole other discussion and not in the scope of my question.  Just letting you know I am completely ignorant (almost) about smartphones and smartphone technology and capability.

We have an email recipient who states they cannot open or view the encrypted PDFs sent from the email appliance.

Is this simply because she doesn't have a reader to open/view them?  Or are smartphone not able to open/view encrypted PDFs?

Any help and advice for me to pass along would be absolutely great!

Thanks!

    Don't worry, me too :)

We only fully support Adobe Reader running on Windows, but the vast majority of PDF readers should actually work with password protected PDFs.  The iPhone should work too - I think the app you need to use is 'iBooks'.

Unfortunately some PDF readers might not be capable of opening password protected PDF.  Also, mobile PDF readers might not be able to open attachments in the PDF, or click the 'Secure Reply' button.  Like you said though, that's a limitation of the PDF reader rather than the Sophos appliance.
