Sophos WS500 and Adobe FlashPlayer Updates

What is the root cause/issue of not being able to download Adobe FlashPlayer and the Sophos WS500 web appliance?

When downloading to install the Adobe FlashPlayer (version doesn't matter) it will get so far and receive a "Download timeout" error message when it gets around 45% - 50%.  I know it is specifically related to the Sophos web appliance as I can by-pass the web appliance and the download works with no problems.

What is weird is I can check the web filtering reports and there are not any blocked sites or pages associated with the download to cause the timeout error.

I didn't know if others were or have experienced this and are just living with the issue or if this is something that has not been reported or if it is I am in the dark on a known issue with a fix readily available.

Thanks!

  • I'm afraid the logging within the Sophos Web Appliance is terrible to say the least.

You may need to open a case and ask Sophos technical support to SSH onto your Web Appliance and diagnose the issue for you.

It's more than likely something to do with authentication (especially if you have the appliance set to explicit mode). We have allowed tons of applications through the Sophos Web Appliance without authentication by using the Agent User String and Connection Profiles. Whereas the same applications authenticate fine through our ISA server.

I'm afraid you're flying blind until Sophos sort out some decent logging on the Web Appliance. Logs that the end users can SEE, and report on WHY the traffic is blocked, and lists helpful information such as the application User Agent string.

    Good luck!
