Sophos Web - Random/Excessive Login Prompts

We currently have 4 Web Appliances, and 1 Management appliance. They are deployed in transparent mode using WCCP.

Here is a screenshot of our authentication settings: http://imgur.com/V1D8CS2

For some users, they will get prompted in what seems like a random pattern.

For example, they will come in, in the morning, go to Google.com, and not get prompted to login. They might surf for a little bit until they hit another page which will then all of a sudden ask them to login.

On top of that, we are trying to rely on ntlm authentication but it does not always work. We primarly use internet explorer, but for whatever reason, some users randomly get prompted to login (failing to pass ntlm credentials), while others are fine.

We are really struggling to deal with this annoying, but complicated problem. Has anyone else run into any issues similar?

Thank you.

  • Hello MoreCowbell,

This issue is most likely due to the your client machines being re-directed to different Web Appliances and them needing to authenicate with each one.   This can be resolved by swtiching to WCCP "source hashing".

To enable this, it will require a configuration change on the backend of the appliance, as well as changing your HTTP WCCP service group from 0 to 90 on your WCCP router(s).   Technical support would be happy to assist you with the change required; just open a support case with them.

    Petr.
