Unable to view spam digest E-mails from the supplied URL link

Hi I wonder if anyone can help me here.

I have been trying (without much success) to get the spam digest URL links to work so that users can see their quarantines E-mails and have a look.

Every time anyone clicks on the URL generated by PM it just says page cannot be displayed and under details the classic IE message of blah blah (see below)

This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:

  • Internet connectivity has been lost.
  • The website is temporarily unavailable.
  • The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.
  • The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain.
  • There might be a typing error in the address.
  • If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section.

I have hunted about on Sophos KB and found this URL which I thought may help but I could not get the message to be forced through.

http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/50520.html

I ran the command line prompt to force the new check and nothing happened.

What else can it be ?

Your confusedly

Andy

this is driving my boss potty as he gets all the spam and want to see if they really are :smileymad:

  • I'm just guessing here, however the IE error  you list seems to indicate that the client can't reach the server. Is there a packet filter, either the local firewall rules, or a more traditional firewall inbetween the clients and the sophos system?

  • Hi Erric I have traditional Windows firewall enabled on the client PC (Win 7 Pro) and the PM server is the firewall for SBS 2008 windows as well. Do these need specific port exclusions done as well? I assumed that the installation would put entries in the firewall configuration? If so what are the port numbers please. Thanks Andy

  • Hi Andy,

I'm not sure about sophos adding or modifying windows rules since I run PureMessage on Linux.

My guess is that these rules are not being modified for you.

    Try this:

from the cmd prompt type: telnet server port

replace server with the IP or fully qualified domain name of the sophos server and replace port with the number the clients would connect to. For example mine would be:

    telnet mail.domain.com 28443

If the screen goes black and it looks like nothing is happening, type: GET / and then press enter twice. You might get some HTML sent back to you.

This would indicate that port 28443 is *not* being firewalled

However if you just get the words: Connecting To servername...    On your screen then the telnet application isn't connecting to the ports and this is due to either the local firewall, or the one on the sophos server.

    Clear as mud? ;-)

  • Hi Andy,

We do not create rules into the windows firewall. Please make sure the port 8081 is open through the firewall.

    Hope this helps.
