Web appliance role based administration

Hi!

I would like to know if there will be any role based administration available for web appliances. (for example administrators that have certain rights on particular group of users or could create different reports for particular group of users - maybe similar like for Endpoint S&C EC)

  • We are currently considering some kind of role-based administration for the product. Role-based administration has two distinct dimensions that I like to characterize as horizontal roles and vertical roles.

    Horizontal roles are all about limiting the kinds of things you can do in the Admin UI - reporting, policy, network configuration, user feedback request processing. This is the most commonly requested kind of role-based admin and we are planning to add some functionality in this area over the next 12-18 months.

    Vertical roles are more the kind of thing you're asking about - providing certain admins with the ability to interact with only certain groups of users - whether that is in creating policy or in generating reports. This kind of integration is certainly on our radar too.

    In the mid-term (18-36 months) we are keen to introduce more management integration between our desktop and appliance products. As you point out, the Sophos Enterprise Console already has systems for controlling roles and sub-estates, and there is certainly a preference for us to integrate with those existing systems rather than creating a parallel model just for the Web Appliance. Look for that integration providing a path to the functionality you're after.
