Confusing error message: "Write error on the epoll handler 186 (Broken pipe)"

I've recently been getting lots of problems with the game Elden Ring via Steam.
It won't log in at all.  Looking at the Web Proxy I see what seems to be unrelated errors (lots of them) that look like this:

2023:04:02-13:48:47 wahine httpproxy[5689]: id="0003" severity="info" sys="SecureWeb" sub="http" request="(nil)" function="plain_write_vector" file="epoll.c" line="1131" message="Write error on the epoll handler 186 (Broken pipe)"

The above seems unrelated to the gaming problem.

Can anyone shed any light on either problem?

Thanks,

Doug

  • For any Steam game, you should only need the following three port designations open:

If you are only trying to get around it by Web Protection, it doesn't work, and the ports are needed.  I have only ever needed these three ports for anything I play in Steam, and my list is somewhat extensive.

    OPNSense 64-bit | Intel Xeon 4-core v3 1225 3.20Ghz
    16GB Memory | 500GB SSD HDD | ATT Fiber 1GB

  • Could he create a webfiltering exception to bypass SSL scanning for the following?

For generic Steam HTTP/HTTPS requests, your proxy should allow the following domains:

    • steampowered.com
    • steamcommunity.com
    • steamgames.com
    • steamusercontent.com
    • steamcontent.com
    • steamstatic.com
