Trials installing UTM 9.5 on ZBOX Nano C1327

Well

I was finally able to get the UTM software installed on the Zotac C1327.  I have it running on 8GB of RAM with an old 120GB SSD Samsung 840 I had sitting around.

The real pain was that I could not get the latest build of UTM 9 to install.  I would just hang at various stages of the install saying there was a problem with the clock or that it could not detect any drives or just run extremely slow. I combed all through the BIOS turning this and that off and even installing by a USB DVD drive and then CF Reader.  Nothing would work.

Until I decided to make a bootable USB install using v9.3

That's when it gave me some hope.

First go through it hung at 66%.  OK, HDMI hookup.  Switched to VGA and all was good.

Second issue was that it could not find install.tar .... Hmmm saw that solution some where.  Ok, just run 'mount /dev/sdb1 /install' before starting the install menu.

After that we had a working system!

But, my question is this.  Why did v9.3 work but not the latest version of UTM 9.5?  What changed?  I'm kinda wondering if I should stick with 9.3, update to 9.4 or try 9.5 again.

  • Ok, looks like there is something in the 9.353004 build that kills it off.  Seem to stick on a new install of the latest 9.4 build at 'switched clock source to hpet'.

    Pnp acpi init

    Acpi bus type pnp registered

    Then hangs around

mce:Hardware error, machine checks events logged.

  • Ok, recorded the boot process and discovered that it fails at:

Probing EDD (edd=off to disable) ... OK

Then the screen goes black and nothing more.

I'm guessing it's something with ACPI and p-state on this CPU.  I found a few references out there that state there is a bug on some 2.6 kernels out there.  Tried to disable a lot of this stuff and the newer 9.3 builds will not fly nor will the 9.4 or 9.5.
