FYI: DynDNS / dyn.com policy change

I received an email from dyn.com (aka dyndns.org et al); apparently they're going to free require users to manually login every month or they will expire accounts.

Yes, the UTM supports dyndns and a few other services... it's in webadmin.

But, according to this news, you'll still need to login to their website monthly.

Shame on dyndns folks. I am in 100% support of them having a viable business model and they do need to make money to survive. But don't sugar coat it by saying "This activity helps us eliminate hostnames that are no longer needed and/or dormant" . Just say our business model has changed and we would like to sell you our product now.

I wouldn't be running a client if I didn't need the hostnames. The earlier mail about the hostnames that were not being updated resulting in their removal made complete sense but this is a little too much to ask[:@]

Any suggestions about other similar dns providers would be welcome.

Bill, I wonder if that isn't for new customers.  I started free DynDNS service for three MediaSoft dynamic IPs several years ago.  At some point, they changed to just offer two for free, but they didn't reduce the MediaSoft account to two.  I haven't logged in to DynDNS recently, but all three hosts are still active there, so I don't think the change applies to our use - they play by the "a deal is a deal" rule.

PS I just confirmed that my account shows: "You are using 3 of the 2 hosts currently available in your account."  All three are still active, so I have confirmed my observations.

dyndns.org used to allow at least 3 subdomains/hostnames in one account, but then they lowered it to 2, so I lost one (maybe it expired, but either way I can't add it back).

I too would appreciate any suggestions for an alternative.

Also, I'm thinking of buying a domain, but I'd still like to have some way of updating it dynamically since I don't have a static IP.

I hope you are correct but my limited research shows otherwise. There are no more free hostnames period. If you are grandfathered in then you have to login once a month. Previously, you had to update the hostname atleast once a month for it to stay active with a dyndns client (which was understandable). I also liked TZO for free dns but seems dyn.com already assimilated that company[:@] 

I have never used dyndns in business settings so I am not concerned about that aspect.  I have 5 hostnames and a couple of static IPs [:$] Back in the heyday of dotcom, it was much easier to assign an IP to a hostname instead of remembering each IP. But I can foresee problems for many users who use netgear and other routers (astaro) that have dyndns client built in and finding themselves without service since dyn.com is under no obligation to deliver their change of policy email to anyone.

I have not received this email personally but logged in just to make sure and everything works. I did find a copy posted on yahoo groups if anyone is interested.  Yahoo! Groups

I have been using zoneedit.com for years and they support most clients and your own hostname. They have been free but I haven't read their TOS lately either[:O]

For anyone reading this and wondering how to accomplish what BarryG's doing, the trick is to use a CNAME like myhost.mydomain.com -> myhostmydomain.dyndns.org.

Yeah, that's what I was planning to do if I bought a domain, but with the dyn.com policy change, it seems risky.

I wonder if there are any name registrars that offer/include ddclient support?
There's a feature request at godaddy: Dynamic IP @ Updater | IdeaShare | Go Daddy Support

and someone's written a php script for godaddy that supposedly works with ddclient (presumably the php script has to be hosted on a webserver, not command-line): GoDaddy DynDns | Stanback.Net
but this is a hack and would break if godaddy modifies their web site (godaddy doesn't have an API)
