WHY?

OK dudes!

I'm a total newbie to such things!
Can anyone tell me, what reasons there are not to use just a simple DSL Router instead of a ASL!

Some DSL-Routers 4 ex. provide IP-Masquerading and Firewall-Filters, DHCP-, DNS- and IP-Routing-Services etc.
So WHY should i really use ASL?
Up to this I am a Linux Newbie aswell!

I would appriciate good reasons, 'cause I have to win somebody for the idea of using an ASL-firewall, so constructive comments are really welcome (didn't really expect something else *g*)!

    does your DSL router also virus scanning, banner filtering, VPN, PortScan Detection, Statefule Packet Inspection,.... ?

    where can I find more 'bout that feature-stuff ... maybe as matrix or even a document in HTML format?

    and what about the linux-newbieness ... will I be able to manage everything safe, though I ain't a real expert ... or are there possibilities to leave backdoors by wrong configuration?

    btw: I have been on a Networkers-Seminary at Conware and I discovered your Webadmin there as Frontend for there new VPN-Solution ... nice work guys, hope to here more from each other soon!  [:)]

    I recently gave away my linksys befsr-41 in favor of astaro. I had purchased the linksys product as a temporary measure while I evaluated other firewalls, it stayed in place a lot longer than I had planned as I had not found a firewall to my liking. I find the astaro product to be a very mature, complete firewall product that is worthy of recognition in the industry. 

    while ASL is quite manageable for someone with little linux experience, it would be beneficial (as with *any* firewall product) to learn basic networking concepts and practices.
