Mismatch ingress and egress traffic

Has anyone notice the ingress and egress traffic mismatch in UTM.  I see this condition almost every time I attempt to diagnose the wan network congestion issue.  The outgoing traffic volume on the wan port is much greater than the traffic volume from the LAN port.  As I understand  the firewall is boarder gateway device.  A traffic comes in one port if it doesn't get rejected or dropped, it will exit out the other port with identical traffic volume.  1MB data comes in from LAN port, 1MB data should exit out the WAN port or other port.  Under what condition would cause 557kb come in the LAN but 3Mb out of of the WAN port?
