Sophos Firewall: STAS - How to troubleshoot: Service Failed: Can not start service

Overview

This recommended read outlines what to do when you experience the following STAS-related errors:

  • Failed: Can not start service.: STAS
  • Fatal Error: The data area passed to a system call is  too small
  • Fatal Error: The service did not start due to a logon failure

The most likely cause of these issues is related to the credentials provided during STAS installation.

What to do

The user accounts used to install STAS must meet the following requirements:

  1. The User must have the "Right to logon as a service" (even if Administrator)
  2. The user must be able to monitor the Security event log
  3. The user mustbe part of the Backup Operations and Event Log Readers group
  4. Full NTFS permission to the STAS folder 

After confirming these requirements. On Windows, go to to:

  1. Start > Run
  2. Type services.msc
  3. Find the Sophos Transparent Authentication Service
    •  
  4. Right-click Logon and enter the STAS user
  5. Click Apply
  6. Go back to STAS, and the service mustbe started already
