  • Hi,

By enabling routing on the bridge interface, will make bridge in participate in routing else traffic will be forwarded based on MAC learning.

As per the diagram, where Port A and Port B are part of bridge pair br0. in this scenario, host having IP address of 172.16.16.2 is pinging to 192.168.1.100. now in case 1 routing is on that means bridge interface take decision of routing. so when packet receives on bridge interface it will route packet on port c and vice versa.

in case of second scenario, when routing is off, the request will forwarded to upstream device and upstream device has connectivity with 192.168.1.0/24 network, so request will come to 192.168.1.100 host, as this host has gateway as Port C so this host will forward packet to it's gateway and Port C will forward packet directly to bridge interface as it's directly connected network.
