Is Sophos Firewall 32bit?

I know it probably isn't since the home license allows 6GB ram.. But anyway here is my problem.

I have an SG105 rev 2 which i have installed XG on with the Hardware Appliance iso.. The thing is that it's running with 80% memory use all the time, so i wanted to upgrade the memory.. The Intel Atom E3826 supports up to 8GB ram.. So I removed the preinstalled 2GB module and installed a 8GB DDR3L module.. The BIOS sees that it has 8GB installed... However the XG only sees 3GB which made me think if theres some kind of check in the Hardware installation iso that checks Appliance Model and chooses 32bit for appliances that comes with less than 4GB of ram..

I could prove my point if tried installing XG on my SG125 rev 2 which comes pre-installed with 4GB ram.. But i guess it's easier to ask here first! [:D]

  • No, SF-OS running on XG Firewalls is a 64-bit operating system.

  • I Thought so.. But can you explain the 3GB ram limit?

  • Well It Turns out that i was right.. It's only running on a 32bit kernel..

So now i just have to prove my point that the installer looks at the appliance model and then chooses either a 32bit og 64bit kernel for it.. So next step will be to install SFOS on my SG125 which is born with 4GB ram.

  • , What would even be the business case for auto-selecting only 32bit over 64bit?

As shown above and definitely proven by the well known 3GB hard limit for 32-bit, Kenneth's machine is 32bit OS.

  • Okay so I removed the SSD from the SG105 and installed it in my SG125. I then installed SFOS using the hardware appliance iso as previously.. There is apparently some check for appliance model during the installation.

I powered off the SG125 after the installation was finished and then installed the SSD in the SG105 again. And now it sees the 4GB RAM module i have installed in it..

BUT! I can't register the appliance i comes up with an undefined license key which i then replace with the one found at the bottom of the device. But that doesn't work either.. So i guess i just have to wait for sophos to allow Software installation on their hardware appliances. feature.astaro.com/.../10754394-allow-xg-home-edition-run-on-sg-hardware
