you can use home edition on XG which limits usage of 4 CPU and 6 GB of RAM with all features.

The other option is to buy Subscriptions: Web, Network, Email and Web Server Protection (Wireless is included on Base License). On XG licenses are based per number of CPU and RAM.

You can buy Enterprise Guard which includes Network and Web, while Full Guard includes Enterprise Guard subscriptions, Email and Web Server Protection.

Thank. I just looked at the price list of our distributor (Exclusive Networks) and they don't seem to sell licenses for the software release. They only have licenses for the official appliances. 

Every Sophos reseller should sell both hardware and SW/Virtual model licenses, contact them directly or try with another one in your country/region.

They do have the virtual licenses. I thought they were only for VMware installation. So these also apply for installations on own appliances?

That is correct. Not only for VMware but also for other virtualization platforms and custom hardware builds.
