XG now main internet access

Hi folks,

the XG is now my main internet access rather than test and learn toy. My VM server died at the same time as the phone (ADSL) died.

So now there are two very active users rather than just a lot of miscellaneous laptops doing software updates and minor results uploads.

One thing have noticed is very large downloads fail and I had to move to the UTM to complete the update eg mac 10.11.3.

  • Ian, is this over wireless, or wired? Are you using the web proxy for these downloads?

As Luk noted, it's not any sort of general product problem, so some more info and troubleshooting might be necessary to pin it down.
  • Hi Alan,
I haven't been ignoring you, just tied up trying to get my home internet connections and phone working, sort of.
In both cases it was using wifi. The XG version downloaded and failed a number of times where as the UTM downloaded first time.
Yes in both cases the http proxy is used for the downloads.
The logs probably won't show much because it I have done some major changes to get the rest of my network back online. VLANs, VoIP phones and Sophos APs which still have outstanding questions on.

  • I'm not ignoring you back :) but just getting back to this now. I guess you're not able to easily test this again - but if you are, the next step would be to watch the web and firewall logs during such a problem, and see if there is any suspicious errors.

  • Hi Alan,
I wasn't expecting prompt replies, you do have a busines to run.

I can't test much of anything at the moment. I am hoping the Telstra tech will arrive shortly as promised to fix both ADSL services and landline. Current internet speed is a very unstable 1mbs/390kb/s. A lot of pages don't load and crash, downloading any files just isn't on. Then I am on leave for a week, house sitter in to check the phone and adsl services.

  • Ian, I have been able to update Mac's, iPad's and other devices over the air and the XG never interfered with downloads as long as webfilter and other security settings were off ;-)

Enabling Webfilter alone breaks updates for many software services not only such obvious things like Windows and OS X.

    Regards,
    Slawek

  • Hi Slawek,
I have been able to run a lot of updates into W7, W10 and Macs, just one version which was a full MAC beta continually failed when connected through the XG, but ran to completion when connected to the UTM. I have the same policies in place for all downloads.
Currently running 10.11.4 (b) which installed without an issue.
More things to try on return from holidays.
