Managed Access Points

I now that Sophos sells managed accesspoints. That's a great solution for businesses but as I'm a home Software XG user, I was thinking if it would be possible to control access points running OpenWRT. I have a TP-Link SOHO router which I flashed with OpenWRT and it is working as AP with a switch. It would be nice if I could control it using SFOS.

  • Currently not supported and not likely because they do not provide an integrated management package. You would be better off buying an AP15 if you want AP management.

  • Well, I tried to contact a local authorized dealer - no luck - haven't replied to any of my emails. So I don't even know the price range. I can pay for that extra convenience a few more bucks when compared to regular SOHO equipment, but dumping hundreds on an AP for home use is a little overkill.

  • I got very lucky on Ebay the other week and I managed to nab myself two AP30s for £80 including delivery second hand. All I needed to do was grab a POE injector or a PSU.

Unfortunately, buying new will be expensive but you can get lucky second hand and around now is the right time to keep your eye out as the AP30s have been discontinued and people will be decommissioning them by moving up or down a model depending on usage.

  • That's a really good deal. I've looked at eBay and can only see devices from USA. Is it ok to buy those devices from States for use in EU?

    Slawek

  • Mine came from the USA, the devices will be ok, but if they come with the POE it might be a problem but only for the POE injector (110vac and all that, most devices like this are 100-250vac but just to be sure). But I bought some Ubiquiti POE injectors and they worked fantastically.
  • Becareful with the AP30s, they good, but a bit temperamental. A new AP15 is cheaper, better and uses less power.
I ad an AP30, had to be unbricked, then recently it died. It was a number of years old from the first beta Astaro awarded prizes.
