Forced file system integrity checks

This has to be a mistake on my part, right?

I bring my 1T drive that would not (or so I thought) install the XG software to work and dig up an old, in perfect working condition,  Optiplex 760 to try again.  Get the system going, and again, it just sits there.  But since my internet didn't depend on this thing coming up I just let it sit there.  Over an HOUR later the thing starts making this goofy noise indicating that it was finished.  Seriously?  Over an hour to install on a 1T drive?  Is this an anomaly?

But, the fun is just beginning.  I connect to the default IP address and log on to the box to begin the process of registering it. As I am going through the network config steps I come to the "Mode" option.  Gateway or bridge.  Since my old unit is a ASG... I figure that means I should run the thing in Gateway mode, but none of the diagrams match how my current system is setup.  I'm bored, so I look at the settings figuring I can just click "Back" after checking it out.  Well, once I go take a peek at "Bridge" the dang back button does nothing, leaving me to just exit the wizard.

So.  I guess the thing is in bridge mode, or in a state of confusion, or whatever.  No idea.

I am now presented with the requirement to register the thing.  Oddly enough, this works.  I really don't see how as all of my traffic out of the computer I have on the network with the XG is showing in my content filter as 172.16.16.17.  I would have thought that any traffic leaving the XG box for the internet would be showing as the IP address of the WAN interface.  Anyway.

I decide to change the admin IP of the XG box to 192.168.1.254 to clearly distinguish it from my actual work ranges.  When I do this, I get some cryptic error message that is only there for a few seconds, but I "think" said "you can't do that", then I loose access to the box.

That was at 9:00.  I had to force kill the box and it has been performing a "Forced System Integrity Check" ever since.  Or at least I assume that is what it is doing since the screen went black after a few minutes.  The HD light is still merrily flashing away, but if it doesn't do something soon I will see what happens if I use another 160G drive.  At this point a new install would definitely have been faster.

  • I think the time to complete is based on the fact that the installation does a full format of the drive. The reason behind the full format in my opinion is a security one to ensure there are no nasties left on the disk.
Try doing a full format of the 1tb drive on a windows PC and see how long that takes.

  • I installed it as a second drive in another system and was surprised to see that it showed as a completely empty, single partition 960GB drive, even though it would still boot up the XG software. Must be using some odd format scheme.

Anyway, I was able to "Quick Format" the drive in just a few minutes. I got distracted and never did the "Non quick" format.

The only other drives I have just sitting on a shelf are 80G drives out of old Dell Optiplex 755's. So, I guess I will just stop worrying about it.

    Thanks for the reply.
