Sophos Home Firewall Edition - How to get it licensed?

I've used Sophos Home Firewall edition for years and never had a licensing issue, now after the newly upgraded Sophos Central last year i have not been able to get a working Sophos Home Firewall license.

The site still says it's free for full protection

" Features full protection for your home network, including anti-malware, web security and URL filtering, application control, IPS, traffic shaping, VPN, reporting and monitoring, and much more. "

https://www.sophos.com/en-us/free-tools/sophos-xg-firewall-home-edition

Does anyone know how I can obtain a full home firewall license? When I go to that site and follow the registration process I get an email with a serial # in this format (V01001234567890), but i am not able to use this anywhere on the appliance or on sophos central firewall licensing. So I am always stuck with just a 30 day evaluation license.

I have tried so many different options including going to the old licensing site (https://myutm.sophos.com/) which gives you a license file, and importing that into the new appliance but it always flashes an Error in red at the bottom of the screen after logging into Sophos central.

This is extremely frustrating and appreciate any solution to this.

Thanks

  • Hi,

Why di you try to change your licence after the CM upgrade? You cannot install an XG licence on a UTM. The new licence requires a fresh install. The UTM licence is a file, while the XG licence is a string which validates agains the licensing server.

  • Since nothing else was working, I figured I would at least try to import the utm license since the appliance gives you that option under "Administration" at the bottom of the page it has a button for "Migrate UTM 9 License" as shown below.

But it still doesn't work for me, and errors out anyway. I'm at a loss of how to get it licensed, a fresh install of XG Firewall only gives me a 30 day evaluation.

  • Hi,

the migrate UTM to XG is only available to commercial licences, not home licences. What version of XH firmware are you trying to install? You need to make sure you are installing the SFOS version and applying the iicence you were sent in the mail message at build time.

what hardware are you trying to install the software on, if it is an SG or XG hardware you need to replace the disk is the easiest path to follow?

  • I used the ISO provided by the link I posted for Home Use. The filename is "SW-19.5.2_MR-2-624.iso" so version 19.5.2.

As for the hardware, it's an old Dell 980 sff with i7 and 16G ram, more than enough to support XG.

  • Hi,

thank you for the update. You can only install your home licence from your XG when installing the software.  Sounds like the hdd still has some UTM information which needs to be deleted by completely reformatting the hard drive not using MS formatting.

  • Oh really, I was under the impression the XG installer handles that for you, it tells you it will completely wipe/erase the drive. But if you think it is still somehow detecting the previous install I can certainly try wiping the drive first then installing. Will try, thank you for your assistance with this, it's very much appreciated

will update on the results tomorrow.

  • Hi,

the XG installer wipes the system part of the disk, not the licensing part of the disk which is where the issue comes from.

  • I just finished wiping the entire disk and reinstalling the FW and was able to enter my new serial # and now finally have the unlimited license. So that was exactly the issue and you just saved me a lot of headaches.

Thank you very much! Really appreciate your help on this and maybe this thread will help someone else that runs across the same issue.

  • The disk issue is usually when people use recycled Sophos hardware.
