Low speed at the AP

Hey guys, here is my current problem.

I run a home lab at my home with a bare metal firewall from Sophos (sg 210 with xg software) the firewall works great and does what it should. Since I startet using acces points from Sophos (Ap 50 and Ap 55) I have the problem that alltough i have an 300 mbps connection from my ISP I only get 15 mbps +- up and down to my wireless devices which is very oppressive considering the maximum speed of the connection. On the wired devices I get 100% of the 300 mbps. I already changed the traffic shaping settings to the maximum bandwith from the fire wall (2560000 kb/s).

Is there a limitation somewhere wich i didn't find yet, are the ap's the bottleneck or is there something else to consider?

I hope that this comunity can help my. I'm strugling with this problem some time now.

Kind regards

Elias

  • Hi,

Both APs are EOL at the end of November 2023.

Check that the cables are capable of running 1gb/s connections.

Are they connected directly to the XG or are they through  switch? Check the settings of the switch ensure auto-negotiate and 1gb/s.

  • Hi,

the APs are connected through a switch to the XG and both connections are 1gb/s. Yesterday I changed the Sophos App with App from Unifi and there I get 70 mbps up and 50 mbps down. So I guess it has something to do with the APs from Sophos. Maybe because they are EOL.

    Kind regards Elias

  • Being EOL should not affect the APs performance, the issue would be they are not supported and not get firmware updates.

There would be something wrong with the configuration in the XG wifi tab.

  • Interesting to hear, what could be wrong there?

  • What speed do you have the channel set at because in the Unifi APs the channel bandwidth is not controlled by the XG?Please compare the channel bandwidth settings in the various APs.

  • That's true but for testing I'v set up the Unifi AP with the phone app and with the local hosted "server" on my Mac. My results were that the Unifi AP uses the 80 MHz channel in Auto mode by default.

Both of my Sophos App are configured the following: 2,5 Ghz in the 20 MHz band and the 5 Ghz in the 40 MHz band. I also changed the bands around but there was still no improvement. And to be sure I tested the AP's one at a time, so the AP's won't disturb each other. What I also did is that I downloaded a software which allows me to so see where the other Wifi's of my neighbors are located in the spectrum. Resulting from that I changed the channels around to where there weren't so many wifi's.

    Kind regards Elias

  • Hi,

The Sophos APs do not allow the Macs to run to full connection speed unless you have a very long down load, that is partly why I use the Unifi APs also wifi6.
