So is Sophos XG and Sophos UTM both going to run side by side as separate products now?

So I have been using Sophos UTM for a while now and i really liked it, but when i saw Sophos XG I thought it was an upgrade from UTM so i decided to test it out.  But from what I have experienced they seem to be completely different products but do have some overlap.

So is Sophos going to EOL the UTM line now or will it continue alongside XG?

Thanks

JK

  • Could someone from Sophos tell me the pros & cons between the 2 products? When would I want to use XG over UTM and vice versa?

    Thanks

  • Yeah, the UTM and XG are quite different. At this time, I'm not aware of any plans to discontinue the UTM. It will still be supported for quite some time.

The XG firewall pretty much adds more functionality to the UTM. The main feature you gain is the security heartbeat that allows your endpoints to integrate with the firewall. If you're interested, there's a little more information available here: https://blogs.sophos.com/2015/11/09/xg-firewall-faq/

I think it would be more accurate to say XG (i.e. Cyberoam) offers different functionality than the UTM.  For it to add "more" functionality, there would first have to be feature parity with UTM ... and there is much more to do to get there.  That lack of feature parity is behind most of the negative comments about SFOS.

That may appear to be parsing words, but "words are important".

  • Thanks Guys, yeah that was my initial thought after using XG for a while after using UTM for ages that they are both different products.

Surely it would make sense if Sophos was to now combine the best of both into one product. I assumed XG was an upgrade to UTM when i first heard about it, but can now see they are both very different.

The problem im having now is which do i choose? lol

If Sophos can manage to make one product from the best of XG and UTM they will have one killer product on there hands which will take a lot to beat.

I am going to stick to UTM for my clients for now as I know all the ins and outs of UTM and so far I dont think I can use XG there until the migration tools are out.

Also there are definitely some features i sorely miss from UTM in XG.

I do think surely i am not the only person who is getting confused between the 2 products seeing as they are both aimed at doing the same things.

    Thanks
