Chrome cannot update or install

Hi folks,

We recently put it new XG, and I'm new to Sophos in general.

One issue I've noticed is that Google Chrome no longer updates, and neither can it install.

On the update side I see -

The Chrome downloader installs, but running the .exe it just sits at "Waiting to download".

This happens on all machines in the company.

We're running no application filtering, and the Default Workplace Policy on the firewall.

I don't see anything in the logs that looks like it's preventing this, and running the various Chrome update URLs through the policy check seems to greenlight everything.

Has anyone experienced this before? I'm happy to provide any additional information as needed.

  • Nope.  Chrome (Google), Microsoft, and so many other vendors update will fail.

You must use a third party updates installer to have updates work.  I use PDQ Arsenal.

WSUS server will not work unless you have and any-any-any rule in your Firewall for your WSUS server.  ISOs larger than 2 gig have a very good chance to fail. Any form of HTTPS scanning, WEB filtering, IPS, or whatever mechanisms, will fail with SOPHOS XG.  Your users must have very basic internet needs.

At the moment users contact anything like Government websites, Bank accounts, Insurances Websites.  XG will fail.  You will most likely be swallowed by exceptions non-sens.  Waste months of work trying to figure out which sites to add.  And in the end, discouraged, you will setup an any-any-any rule that you turn on then off every-time a user needs it.

You will call support and they will have no clue.  They are not to blame.  It cannot work.

    Sorry.
