Migrating Sophos SMC 9.0.2 to another server

Hello there,

I have a Sophos SMC 9.0.2 that I want to migrate from Server 2008 R2 to Server 2012.

I have backed up the database from the old server, restored it onto the new server, then run the installer for SMC which installs, but then will not connect to the database. One thing I am worried may be an issue is that the original server had the full blown SQL server installed (2012) and this new server I am trying to use SQLExpress. The database size restriction is not an issue. I have installed SSMS and gone into the database on the new server and checked all the permissions which seem to be fine (have DBOwner and all the neccessary DB rrights). I can log on with my credentials onto SSMS to manage the DB so don't see why the SMC won't connect to the DB with those same credentials.

Is there something I am missing here or do I need to have the full SQL server installed as that was what I was migrating from.

Or alternatively is there something I should be doing to migrate from SMC 9.0 that I am missing here?

  • Hello _J_R_,

Thank you for reaching out to the Sophos Community Forum.

I had a chance to try this in a VM environment and was required to turn on "TCP/IP" and "Named Pipes" via SQL Server Configuration Manager before the Sophos Mobile Configuration Wizard allowed me to connect to the local database. Once enabled, I also had to reboot the server so that the SQL Services were able to re-start and allow me to connect.

Are there any errors you’re seeing when proceeding with the SMC Configuration Wizard?
